✍️🃏Editorial: I used to do “real” things

The simple act of repairing my child’s toy made me realize how different my bonus life is from my past life.

In my past life everything I created, repaired or used was “real” meaning it existed in physical space and it was made from atoms, when the power went out, it was still there…I had acquired decades of skills to build things, grow things, repair things and use real tools.

Fast forward to yesterday, My son had broken the tank off of a cheap plastic tanker truck. He handed it to me and said “fix it” with those eyes, you know the ones, and my old skills kicked in, it has been weeks since I used even a screwdriver. I knew instinctively exactly what this truck needed, a single, small, self tapping screw through the bottom of the truck. I had just such a screw in my left-over screw pile so the repair took about 60 seconds, and my son happily went off to break something else…

This simple act started me thinking how much my life has changed. I used to spend my entire day working in the “real world” but now I spend all my time creating things, repairing things and using tools that aren’t “real”.

I’m not sure if this a good change or a bad one, maybe there needs to be some balance, maybe one is better than the other…I just don’t know, but I will most likely find out sometime in the future…

I believe I need to start making time to create real things again. I thoroughly enjoyed the 60 seconds spent repairing that simple, cheap, broken toy.

Real? or not so much?
