Preply Update November 2024

My Preply experience

Another month gone by. In November I lost my Super Tutor badge, it was very close, actually, 2 days after the stats were recorded I had a trial student sign up for classes, which put me over the line, but too late.

Most tutors say that the badge really doesn’t help getting new students, however, I disagree, it might have only been a coincidence or the algorithm moved me way down on the list, but I have not had any trial lessons this month, zero, very odd. This situation can either be seen as good or bad, on one hand I’m not teaching a bunch of lessons that I don’t get paid for, on the other hand I don’t get any new students. So eventually it will become a problem.

There is a good chance I will get the badge back during December, but in January the new conversion rate goes up another 10% which will be a tough nut to crack.

That said, the students I do have are keeping me pretty busy. Some days are booked very solidly. Yesterday I had 8 50 minute classes, which I don’t like to do but I need to make hay while the sun shines. Today was only 2.5 classes and one was a no show. One thing that is consistent about Preply is the inconsistency.

The long hyped “new” classroom is now in use. It looks like they mostly moved the buttons to the bottom of the screen and now we have dark mode instead of white…weeee…😑

Preply continues to make improvements to it’s AI generated Lesson Insights, they show promise but so far for me they are a novelty to keep checking in on.

I had another lesson in how small the world is this week. One student who has been taking lessons for a few months surprisingly said that his friend and co-worker had also selected me as a tutor. The strange thing is that they live in different countries, speak different languages, signed up months apart and had only that day discovered that they shared the same tutor. Weird!?!…

It truly is a small world
