🐨🛝The Park - by Dawn

I think Dawn is my best student. She put together several ideas from this newsletter and created a nice little template that she can re-use by replacing the content.

Here she uses puzzle pieces and the multiple choice gravity maze.

Spell some words to open a gate.

In the end you will find the park for more practice using the vocabulary, prepositions or whatever. After the lesson goals are reached you can run around and shoot some hoops or some other creative games the students come up with.

✍️🃏Preply Update

I know that my experience with Preply is not going to be the same as it may be for others, but things have been going well for me. It is such a huge improvement over the last place I worked.

It looks like I will achieve the Super Tutor badge again this month, although it isn’t a key to instant success it certainly doesn’t hurt to have that extra gold star even though most students don’t even notice it.

My schedule is slowly getting a little more full, about 20 hours/week now, I need a few more than that, but I have been told that this is a slower part of the year on Preply.

I have taught about 250 lessons so my commission rate has gone from 33% at the start, down to 22%, another 150 lessons and I will get down to the lowest rate of 18%. Big difference. People constantly complain about this commission but in my opinion and being honest about my own marketing abilities, 78% of something is far and away better than 100% of nothing.

Since raising my rates I have noticed some changes:

  • I have fewer trial lessons being booked, I expected that, and that’s ok, I seem to be signing up a higher percentage of the trials that I do have.

  • I am getting a different type of student, mainly professionals that want help with English in the work environment. I am really enjoying these classes and the lesson format I designed seems popular with the students as well as being effective.

I still need to fine-tune my profile but I am reluctant to change something that seems to be working. I know I need to do it though.

Teaching on Preply has been a great stepping stone to going fully independent. Besides marketing you really have control over all the other aspects of your business, for example, your schedule, your hourly rate, your curriculum, and even when you get paid.

Overall Preply was the right choice at the right time for me, fingers crossed that it remains so until I am ready to move on.

💧👩🏻‍🏫Seeking content for Dunk The Teacher and Escape the planet

Do you like the concept behind these games but they don’t have the right content for you? Send me an email about it.

My original plan was to offer many different versions with the content that teachers like yourself wanted (each version at $3), but since I cannot read minds I need you to tell me what you need. 😆

Submissions

🙋🏽‍♂️🤷🏻‍♀️How do I submit my Playground to be featured in Koala Bites?

If you have a Playground you would like to have in this newsletter, or for that matter, anything the readers might find useful. Just click that button that says “Submissions”. That will open an email for you to describe what you would like to submit.

I like to schedule a time where I can come to your classroom and tour the Playground. Then I will do a short write-up. There is no cost for this.

Bye-bye
